Sebaceous Cyst Removal in London

Consultant-led · day surgery · Harley Street, London
A sebaceous (or epidermoid) cyst is a sac under the skin that can grow, become tender or get infected. At Minor Surgery UK a consultant removes the whole cyst, including its lining, from £540 under local anaesthetic — which prevents it coming back. You go home the same day.

What the procedure involves

The entire cyst, including its wall (lining), is removed through a small incision under local anaesthetic. Removing the lining is what stops the cyst recurring — unlike simple drainage, which usually comes back.

When a growth needs checking, not just removing

Most cysts are harmless, but any skin lesion that is changing, bleeding, crusting, not healing, or simply doesn't look typical should be assessed to rule out skin cancer before any cosmetic removal. If a consultant has any concern about a lesion, it is investigated and, where removed, sent for laboratory analysis (histology) rather than simply taken off for appearance.

When to remove a cyst

Removal is advised when a cyst is enlarging, tender, recurrent, getting in the way, or has been infected. An actively infected cyst may need the infection settled first.

Recovery

You leave the same day. Stitches are removed after about 7–14 days. Most people return to normal activities quickly, keeping the wound clean and dry as advised.

Frequently asked questions

How much does cyst removal cost?
At Minor Surgery UK, sebaceous and epidermoid cyst removal starts from £540, confirmed at consultation.
Why not just drain the cyst?
Simply draining a cyst usually lets it refill, because the lining remains. Removing the whole cyst including its lining is what prevents it returning.
Is cyst removal painful?
No — it is performed under local anaesthetic, so the area is numb. You may feel pressure but not pain.
Will the cyst come back after removal?
If the whole cyst and its lining are removed, recurrence is uncommon. Drainage alone has a much higher chance of the cyst returning.
What if my cyst is infected?
An actively infected cyst may need the infection treated first, then removed once settled. Your consultant will advise on timing.
How long is recovery?
You go home the same day, with stitches out after 7–14 days and a quick return to normal activities.
